Snow Coming For Southcentral

We’ve had an unusually bare winter so far, but the National Weather Service says that’s about to change. Meteorologist Shawn Baines predicts light snow tonight, and has his eye on a stronger change expected Friday evening…

Baines: “And this does look like it’s going to bring pretty widespread snow to the Kenai Peninsula, as well as all of Southcentral and in fact will be one of the biggest winter storms of the season.”

Temperatures will hover around freezing due to a gusty south wind. Baines said that may result in blowing snow conditions.

We asked if this means the Peninsula may have a snow sports season after all…

Baines: “That is possible, depending on how much snow we can get out of this storm system here. It just depends. I certainly think interior Kenai Peninsula as you head into the hills will see more snow out of there, where Kenai, right on the Inlet and as I said temperatures hovering right near freezing, that’s going to keep the snow accumulation down. Not expecting a big snow, but maybe a few inches of snow.”

Temperatures will drop steadily into early next week with highs in the teens and lows below zero.
