The Alaska House may forward a version of the state operating budget which is $273.8 million smaller than last year.
The full chamber is expected to take up the House Finance Committee’s recommendations today, though Democrats say the cuts are too deep. Minority members say they’re especially concerned by cuts to early education programs.
Majority members said they were generally comfortable with the “compromise” bill and look forward to continuing work on the multi-year process to get the budget back in the black. Without significant changes, the state is facing a multibillion-dollar deficit due to low oil prices.
