Early St. Patrick’s Auroras Caused by Solar Storm

A geomagnetic storm produced gorgeous auroras in the early hours of St. Patrick’s Day.

According to SpaceWeather.com, a coronal mass ejection from the sun struck the earth and intensified into the strongest geomagnetic storm during the current solar cycle.

 

Before sunrise this morning, bright auroras were sighted over several northern-tier US states including Minnesota, Wisconsin, Montana, the Dakotas and Washington.

 

That storm is still ongoing and may produce more auroras tonight.
