Two fires kept Nikiski Firefighters busy on Sunday.
At 12:23 on March 29, fourteen personnel and eight pieces of apparatus from Nikiski Fire Department plus an engine with personnel from Kenai Fire Department responded to a detached garage fire near mile 33 of the Kenai Spur Highway.
Crews aggressively attacked that fire to minimize the damage to the structure and that fire’s cause is still under investigation.
While mopping up, personnel and engines were called to a wildland fire near mile 24.5 which was caused by a camp fire igniting wood shavings.
Actions by the homeowners along with those of the Nikiski Fire Department stopped the fire from spreading.
As we previously reported, this summer has been forecast to be another high fire season and burn permits will be available through forestry and local firefighter departments as of April 1.
Nikiski Fire Department recommended that residents should always contact their local fire department before burning outside and that approximately 2/3 of all Alaska fires are human caused.
