Kenai Requests Water Project Funds Re-Appropriation

A grant to the City of Kenai originally slated for a water transmission main extension on Beaver Loop was requested to be re appropriated.

City Manager Rick Koch said it was scheduled to happen with a road project on Beaver Loop that has been delayed a number of times and the re appropriation is required so the grant does not time out.

Koch: “The re appropriation is to change the scope of the work so it can be used for other water system improvements. It’s all going to happen in the same schedule it’s just going to be for different improvements to the water system.”

He was able to chat with Governor Bill Walker about why the state should re-appropriate it since he knows the state is looking to cut state grants where not needed.

Koch: “It’s going to build new wells, it’s going to build sand separators, it’s going to provide some money for our new million gallon water storage reservoir out in the Beaver Loop area, there’s a pump house that’s going to be constructed there, and we need to take our $3 million gallon reservoir at the airport offline and re-coat the inside of it. The coating system’s about 30 years old, which is about 5 years longer than what they usually last.”

Koch said that coating is regularly monitored and has not affected the water at all.
