Woken by dense smoke, a man escaped from his log cabin this morning with little but the clothes on his back.
Brad Nelson, Central Emergency Services Safety Officer, said their crews responded to Heavy Down at 3:45 this morning…
Nelson: “Just too far behind the power curve, the house wasn’t savable. It was fully involved, roof caving in before we got there. So we stayed out there, got the fire out, made sure it didn’t go anywhere else. The house was assessed at $63,000, I’m guessing that it’s worth a little bit more than that, just because the house was still under construction, it was still assessed low. If it was a completed house it would have been worth definitely a lot more than that.”
Due to the extent of the damage, Nelson said it’s impossible to tell how the fire began.
The owner did not have working smoke detectors in the house. Nelson said the early alert could have made a significant difference.
The two-story log home was considered a total loss.
