Walmart to Install Locked Gun Cases in Alaska Stores

After an Eagle River Man jumped the gun counter and stole two rifles last week, Alaskan Walmart stores, including Kenai, are changing how they display guns for sale.

Hofman: “It will be consistent with how guns are displayed currently in our stores across the U.S. so it will be in locked cases.”

Spokeswoman Erin Hofman with Walmart said safety precautions are reviewed at all of their stores on a regular basis but individual to each store.

Hofman: “We have a lot of security measures in place just to make sure that we do have a safe environment for our customers and our associates, things that include additional cameras, security cameras in these specific areas; Also when someone lawfully purchases a gun, we do the purchase at a register and a member of management does walk with them until they are out of the building.”

Previously guns had been secured behind the gun counter with a locked cable and Hofman said she is not able to say whether there was a confrontation with the Eagle River man by an associate when he stole the guns.

Currently Kenai’s Walmart gun display is empty as they wait for those gun cases to be installed.

Hofman said she does not have an anticipated date of when that might happen.
