Land Clearing on Hold For Migrating Birds

Land clearing on the Kenai Peninsula recently become more complicated and expensive. Kenai City Manager Rick Koch said there are a different set of federal regulations to keep in mind when cutting down trees during bird migration season…

Koch: “You can still clear, but you have to hire consultants that literally give you a tree by tree clearance as you’re moving forward trying to clear property. So you see quite often this time of year developers and contractors that are involved in different projects, there’s a real push to get the clearing out of the way before the bird nesting season.”

The Fish and Wildlife Service says the season runs May 1 through July 15 for Southcentral Alaska.
