No one was looking for a repeat of the 2014 Funny River fire, so all hands are on deck as half an acre burned in that area today.

The fire began 14 miles down Funny River Road on Robin Ave. Helicopters responded with fire fighting crews and bucket drops to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby structures.

The fire is under control and a retardant-carrying plane was turned back. Three engines and an aircraft were on scene.

Captain Terry Bookey with Central Emergency Services said they responded and helped the Division of Forestry get the fire under control before handing it over to the state agency.

It was the second fire CES responded to today. The first was a structure fire in the Sport Lake area close to 7 AM this morning.

Capt. Bookey wrote, ” At 07:37 am on May 24, 2015 Central Emergency Services was dispatched to a structure fire on Rafie Street off of Sports Lake Road.

The first units arrived 6 minutes after notification at 07:43 am. Crews reported a single story, wood framed, single family home with heavy fire coming from the kitchen/living room area.

The fire was declared under control 34 minutes after units arrived on scene. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. CES Responded with 1 engine, 1 medic unit, 3 tankers, 1 utility vehicle, and 1 command vehicle with a total of 13 personnel.

Kenai Fire Department responded 1 tanker with 2 personnel. Red Cross was notified.”
