Soldotna Police and fire crews were dispatched just before 5 am Friday morning to the Soldotna baseball fields for a fire.
Soldotna Little League President Jerry Holmgaard shared what he’d learned from Soldotna Police…
Holmgaard: “Further investigation found that someone had stolen a vehicle and had done a lot of brodies and stuff in our upper parking lot as well as over in the sports center and then evidently they were recklessly driving and came over and then clipped the porta potty unit that we had over there by the two big fields by the sports center and went down, started to go down the embankment and there’s soft ground there, still a little bit of snow there and got stuck. Instead of just leaving the vehicle and taking off, they decided to set it on fire.”
He said that this isn’t the first act of vandalism at the fields this summer, earlier this year that same porta potty was flipped over before it was anchored down.
Soldotna Police Chief Peter Mlynarik said they are investigating to determine if it was an act of arson or if the act of crashing into the porta potty ignited the fire.
Mlynarik added the vehicle was a Geo Storm and was stolen sometime between 9 pm Thursday night and before 5 am this morning. The car’s owners have been contacted.
The League is requesting anyone with information call the Soldotna Police Department at 262-4455.
