Hiring Freeze Placed on State Departments

A hiring freeze was instituted Friday across most state departments while lawmakers continued to meet in Anchorage hoping to broker the long-running budget impasse.

Just days remain before state employees may be sent notices warning of possible layoffs if a budget deal is not reached by July 1.

The departments of health, public safety, and corrections are not affected by the freeze according to Deputy Commissioner of Administration Leslie Ridle.

She said allowances may be given to some agencies which deal with life, health or safety issues if hires are necessary.

This is just one step administration has taken in case lawmakers do not reach a budget deal by July 1.
