One week remains in the annual Seward Halibut Derby and the contestants are seeing a slew of 200+ pound halibut.
Seward Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Cindy Clock said the current leader is Mark Ramboa Sr.
Clock: “He’s from Sears, Michigan, I’m looking at the weigh in ticket right now, the fish was 291.2 and he was fishing with Captain Jimmy on the Perseverance. That one came in yesterday morning about 10:30 or 11.”
Currently other front runners in the 2015 derby include Shaun Huckstep of Anchorage who reeled in a 228.2 lb fish and 9 year-old Ron Luksin of Wasilla with a 164.4 lb halibut in the youth division.

Clock said they are seeing more fish weighing in over 200 pounds this year.
Clock: “What happened last year was we had a bunch of fish in the high one hundreds and then on the very last day of the tournament, there was an overnight charter and Cracker Jack Voyager, Captain Andy Mezirow, on the last day he brought in a fish that was 312 pounds.”
The Seward Halibut Derby will end June 30.
