Soldotna Airport Considering Future in Master Plan

The Soldotna Airport is in phase one of the city’s Airport Master Plan Project which is scheduled to be finished this August.

Maintenance Director Scott Sundberg said currently the airport is undergoing asphalt improvements and an apron expansion.

Sundberg: “So the Master Plan is just to look at the growth of our airport in the last 20 years and then moving forward into the future like how much apron space we’re going to need, how many planes are in and out of there monthly/yearly, how many people are there year round, how many summer planes are there and we’re kind of looking at all of that information to kind of see how big the airport is growing to in turn potentially get more funds for the airport for future projects.”

Sundberg said that currently there are mostly privately owned planes and small aviation businesses at the airport but the plan is looking to be ready in case any commercial companies consider Soldotna.

The Soldotna City Council will discuss the funding for Phase two of that master plan tonight.

Just like Phase one, funding sources will be essentially 94% from the Federal Aviation Administration, 3% from the State of Alaska and 3% from the city.

The Soldotna City Council will take public testimony on the allocation of those funds at their meeting which begins at 6 pm tonight at the Soldotna City Hall.
