With the height of Alaskan summer comes the peak of fishing and, of course, the peak of road construction.
Drivers throughout Alaska this summer should give themselves an additional 30 minutes to an hour to arrive at their destinations according to the Department of Transportation’s Shannon McCarthy.
Most road projects only impede traffic Monday through Thursday.
McCarthy: “DOT is pretty mindful of the heavy traffic on the Kenai in particular during the summer months and they will be mindful of those impacts. One that will completely shut down is the Birch Road signal at the Sterling Highway in Soldotna. They’re going to completely shut that project down, they may do some buttoning up things but you won’t see any impacts to the Sterling Highway at the project for the month of July.”
This construction season is seeing over $330 million dollars in projects.
McCarthy: “This is actually the most significant year we’ve had in DOT history for construction, both in terms of the number of projects and the volume of contract payments so it’s a pretty significant year.”
