The Kenai Peninsula School Board discussed the main goals of the upcoming year in a day long work session Tuesday.

Pegge Erkeneff said one main goal for this year is to promote a shared value and responsibility for the process of education throughout the district.

Erkeneff: “That affects everybody. That’s not just for our students and our teachers and their families but our community partners and community members and everybody so that public education and the future of our kids is really of value and we can really see what’s happening in the classroom.”

The second and most talked about point will be funding public education.

Erkeneff: “So it’s multi-layered. Another big piece that we did today was worked with what our budget development process is so that everybody has a lot of clarity together working on that and what that’s going to look like. We’re going to be doing a little bit more engaging the public so they understand what happens with education funding and where revenue comes to with the state and local contributions with education funding.”

Erkeneff said the board will be looking at the variety of expenditures in the district and scenarios that will happen based on the price of oil.

She said the district expects budgets to tighten even further next year and wants the community to be aware of that.
