Negotiations for Borough Education Under Way

Author: KSRM News Desk |

Closed negotiations are scheduled for today between the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District, Kenai Peninsula Education and Kenai Peninsula Education Support associations.

A federal mediator is here to work with all sides on what district spokeswoman Pegge Erkeneff described as the typical sticking points.

Erkeneff: “The big issues for discussions always are compensations, employee benefits, healthcare and then the work environment that one or both sides want to address for possible revisions. By state mandate, by state law, we open up a period of public comment and it’s an opportunity for the public to share their thoughts on the issues that get addressed in collective bargaining, those are all going to be collected, we’re going to keep that comment period open throughout the entire negotiation period and then those comments are going to be given to the School Board.”

The mediation is being held in Soldotna at the borough building but is closed to the public.

Once all sides agree on terms, the Board of Education must approve those.
