A group of community members is protesting Sunday outside of Tobacco Distress in Sterling where they say spice is being sold.
The drug, a synthetic cannabinoid, falls into a gray area in state law which struggles to address the changing ingredients in the manufactured drug.
Soldotna’s Senator Peter Micciche says the sale of spice has had an extremely detrimental effect on Alaska.
Sen. Micciche(R-District 0): “Putting profits before the welfare of the community is pretty concerning. What we’re asking folks to do is report to the troopers any complaints about the sales of spice in the area and if we don’t feel that the sale is discontinued then as a community we’re willing to show our disapproval. And I believe that disapproval will be increasing until we remove that negative epidemic.”
Calls to Tobacco Distress for comment were not immediately returned.
An organizational meeting for the protest will take place at 5:30 pm in the Peninsula Center Mall, Suite #20, this Thursday, October 1.
The meeting will provide an overview of protest laws, a place to make the protest signs, and more details of Sunday’s protest.
