Alaska Same-Sex Marriages Reach Nearly 300 in One Year

One year has passed since a federal judge ruled the state’s ban on gay marriage was unconstitutional. In that time, around 285 same-sex couples have married in Alaska.

Monday is the one-year anniversary of the decision to strike down a voter-approved ban on same-sex marriages.

Couples have been able to apply for Alaskan licenses during that time, except for a brief period last October when a moratorium was placed on marriages.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in June 2015 that same-sex couples have the right to marry following litigation against states across the country.

Nearly 5,590 marriages have been registered in Alaska over the last year including couples who married and turned-in completed marriage licenses.

Matthew Hamby was a plaintiff in the case against Alaska and says little things like paperwork have gotten somewhat easier in the past year.
