Alaskans statewide, including the Better Business Bureau’s Regional Manager, have been targeted in robocalls claiming to be from First National Bank Alaska.
Michelle Tabler: “They’re saying if you have a First National Bank MasterCard that there’s been a compromise and to please give them a call and then they give you a number and when you call they ask for your card number.”
Alaska Regional Manager Michelle Tabler with the Better Business Bureau says she even received a call on her cell phone, which is private, so she believes the robocalls are just trying a series of numbers.
She assures Alaskans that First National Bank is not placing those calls and recommends hanging up if they are contacted in that way.
She says if banking customers are initiating calls to their banking institutions then giving information over the phone is alright but not if the call was initiated by another source.
Tabler: “In other situations where you’re not quite sure, never call the phone number that they’re giving you, you call the phone number that you have for your bank or credit card company.”
Tabler says the bureau has gotten dozens of phone calls about the scam in the past few days.
