Kenai to Review Marijuana Ordinance in Work Session

The Kenai City Council will go through the Planning and Zoning Commission’s proposed ordinance on commercial marijuana regulations at a work session next week.

City Planner Matt Kelley was at the commission’s November 10 meeting where final public comment on their suggested regulations was taken.

Kelley: “Amending Chapter 14 of the Kenai zoning code, home occupations, it would prohibit commercial marijuana establishments as allowed uses under home occupations. And then moving from there we would go to definitions. And then also specific to marijuana, adding a number of definitions for marijuana and marijuana uses.”

Other items included in the ordinance are standards for commercial marijuana establishments and a land use table.

During that final public comment, one local business owner worried that Kenai is on a path to over-regulate the new market that could see state licenses by mid-2016.

The city council work session with the planning and zoning commission will take place at 6:00 pm next Tuesday, December 1, in the Kenai Council Chambers.
