Supply and demand affects the price of natural gas on the Kenai, and old reservoirs are helping producers even out their costs. Paul Decker, Acting Director of the Division of Oil and Gas, said the ability to store gas has been crucial in lowering wintertime heating bills…

Decker: “The most important aspect of gas storage is the actual subsurface reservoirs where the gas can be stored, for example the CINGSA facility now at the former Cannery Loop Unit. Also the Kenai Pool 6 Gas Storage Facility has been operating for quite a while, but the key has been to devote more of these depleted gas reservoirs to being able to store the gas that we need more of in the winter than we do in the summer.”

 

ENSTAR Natural Gas has also announced they’re starting work on the CINGSA Lateral Line which will send natural gas through a pipe to the Anchorage system, saving money by eliminating the cost of gas transportation.
