A serious vehicle accident affected travel on the Sterling Highway Wednesday afternoon around MP 93 near Whistle Hill. No one was killed in the collision, but there were sustained injuries. Meanwhile, traffic ground to a halt while crews were trying to clear the scene.
Dan Grimes, Deputy Chief for Central Emergency Services spoke with KSRM Wednesday, “CES responded and transported one to the hospital. Stable patient. Soldotna PD is investigating the accident.”
A 2018 Jeep Cherokee driven by an 83-year-old unidentified male from Sterling was heading northbound on the Sterling Highway and crossed over into the opposing lane of travel where it struck a 2018 29-foot travel trailer that was being pulled by a 2014 Dodge pickup driven by an unidentified 50-year-male from Sterling.
Soldotna Police state that the collision caused the Cherokee to roll over onto its side in the highway. The travel trailer was destroyed in the collision. The driver of the Cherokee was transported via ambulance from Central Emergency Services to the Central Peninsula Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
Lt. Duane Kant with the Soldotna Police Department told KSRM to drive cautiously this holiday weekend, “I would just encourage people, you know, there’s going to be a lot of traffic out this weekend, especially. Take your time, don’t drink or use drugs before you drive. Wear your seatbelt. Don’t Drive while tired or sleepy, pull over. Also, put away your cell phone while you are driving. Just be gracious behind the wheel and give everybody their space and hopefully they’ll give you yours.”
There currently is no known cause of the accident and the collision is still under investigation.
