The Soldotna City Council passed an ordinance that would increase estimated revenues and appropriations by an additional $672,000 in the General Fund and the Soldotna Regional Sports Complex Capital Project Fund for the SRSC Major Maintenance and Renovation Project. The building is nearly 37 years old and needs revitalization, code deficiency updates, and customer service improvements, according to the city.
City Manager Stephanie Queen:
“This ordinance is brought back before you seeking the additional funding that we feel is appropriate and necessary to finish that core scope of work that’s identified, which includes new exterior doors, new shower and locker rooms, massive improvements to customer service area and the office area so that when people who are maybe are not regular users of the facility will be able to navigate our parks department and interact with staff in a better way as well as the mezzanine. One thing that we did add to the project and, really, I was very supportive of this was a new reader board sign. During the course of this design work, one half of the existing reader board sign has failed. That is very old technology. There is much newer technology that will allow our parks department to communicate much better. We did have built into this cost and estimate, the pricing for a new reader board sign. The sign itself will match the gateway signs and some of the other park signage we put around town and then the technology for the reader board will current today with good technology.”
An ordinance appropriated $1.5 million for the SRSC Major Maintenance and Renovation Project and in January, the Public Works Department contracted with Burkart Croft Architects to provide professional design services. Completion of the design resulted in an increased project cost of $2.4 million. During this summer, several cost saving measures were identified, and construction material pricing stabilized, providing for a reduced cost estimate to complete the project, putting the new cost at $2,083,000, with the digital reader board sign.
