An airbag recall has been issued for 14 brands of cars sold in the U.S. including  BMW, GM, Honda, Mazda, Nissan, and Toyota.

Kenai Fire Chief Jeff Tucker detailed the recall.

Tucker: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued a recall a pretty massive recall its over 5 million vehicles that were manufactured between 2000 and 2011. And they’ve discovered that when the airbag deploys there is a possibility of shrapnel coming out of it as part of the inflator module used in during the airbag activation comes out and releases a projectile.”

Chief Tucker encouraged anyone with those brands of vehicles between those years to call their dealership or the vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236.

Tucker: “We want folks to be aware of it, because its something that if your not told, you know a lot of recalls happen and people keep driving there vehicles with recalled parts on it but this is a truly serious issue it is a safety device and if activated it could actually do harm.
