Alaska Airlines has joined other companies in banning passengers from bringing hoverboards on planes, both in checked baggage and as a carry-on.

ABC’s Alex Stone has the story on airliners banning this popular holiday gift.

Stone: “They’re a hot gift — a bit too hot — now with reports of Hoverboards bursting into flames… SOT: Like you just lit a firework… I see sparks just flying. Delta Airlines and a few others around the globe are banning the popular gliding vehicle gadgets and the batteries that go with them onboard their planes. Delta says the lithium ion batteries are the problem… The devices often contain batteries that can overheat and pose a fire risk. So now hoverboards are banned in flight. Alex Stone, ABC News.”

Alaska Airlines’ Chris Hjort, director of airport policy and procedures, stated in the hoverboards ban announcement: “Here at Alaska, we love technology and we’re always looking for ways to innovate. However, there’s one thing we prioritize above all: safety. We never want to endanger you, your family and friends, or our employees. So we hope you understand when we ask you not to bring your battery-operated self-balancing device on your next flight.”
