Alaska Football Concludes With CIC Championship Game Saturday: Dimond Girls Win Flag Football Title

Author: Coach Dan Gensel |

The Anchorage School District supported Cook Inlet Conference Flag Football and Cook Inlet Conference Football championships close-out the 2020 football season with Anchorage programs on the field and all other state football programs on the sideline.

The Alaska School Activities Association mandate issued on October 13th stated:

The Alaska School Activities Association is announcing the cancellation of all 2020 Fall
State Championship Events. For the activities currently in season, Regions are allowed to
complete their Regional championships, if they are able to do so prior to November 22,
2020.
This decision applies to the following: Football, Swim & Dive, Gymnastics, Rifle, Music,
Esports, DDF and Volleyball.

This move by ASAA effectively ended football outside of the Cook Inlet Conference within the Anchorage School District.

The Kenai Peninsula School District followed with a suspension of all activities.

Message from Superintendent O’Brien:
“Due to all three main KPBSD regions being in High Risk/RED status and with recent high daily positive COVID-19 counts, all KPBSD Elementary, Middle, and High School activities are suspended immediately through Monday October 26th. We will re-evaluate on Monday morning (26th). This includes inter/intra district competition, intramurals, practices, and skill building practices.”

Anchorage football, as the “last man standing” crowned a Flag Football Champion on Thursday and will crown a Cook Inlet Conference Football Champion on Saturday.

Cook Inlet Conference Flag Football Championship Game

Dimond 22 – West 0

The Dimond Lynx girls flag football team captured its eighth Cook Inlet Conference Flag Football Championship in nine appearances in the Anchorage-area girls football league.

Dimond defeated West Anchorage 22-0 on Thursday at Dimond High School.  Dimond coach Kathleen Navarre (graduate of Kenai Central High School) lead her team to a championship from a #4 seed into the tournament.  Dimond downed Service 19-6 and defeated South 7-6 to advance to the title game.

The flag football regular season and playoffs were allowed to continue under ASAA’s October 13th mandate which stated, “Flag Football, Gymnastics, Swim & Dive, 2A/3A/4A Volleyball, Rifle and Bowling:  Schools may only play within their geographic or ASAA Regions and must complete any competitions by November 21, 2020.”

ASAA currently does not recognized a  state tournament for Flag Football as it does not meet the ASAA criteria.

Cook Inlet Conference Football Championship Game

Playing through a shortened regular season and ASAA and ASD mandates and protocols, East Anchorage and Bartlett will play for the Cook Inlet Conference Football Championship on Saturday, October 24th at East Anchorage High School.

East, seeded #1 for the ASD tournament, finished the regular season at 6-0; Bartlett, seeded #4, recorded a 4-2 regular season.

Friday, Chugiak and Service will play in the CIC 5th-Place Game; West and South elected to not play a 3rd Place Game.

The CIC Championship Game is not an ASAA state-sanctioned championship.  ASAA passed a motion at the October 13th ASAA Fall Board Meeting which cancelled all state championship events scheduled to take place prior to January 1, 2021.  As a result of this action taken by ASAA, the sanctioned, state football playoffs were cancelled.
