Delays and closures on the Al-Can Highway could affect vehicles driving from Montana.
The Alaska Highway reopened this morning after fire activity from the Big Beaver Fire in British Columbia, Canada, closed it at Mile 250 Wednesday afternoon.
The fire is around 31 miles south of Ft. Nelson, B.C. and nearly 900 miles from the Alaskan border.
Although the highway has reopened as of this morning, the B.C. Wildfire Service is using pilot cars to guide single lanes of traffic through the thick smoke.
Delays are expected on the highway according to officials.
The Big Beaver Creek wildfire’s behaviour was significantly increased by strong winds; ground and aerial crews were pulled back Wednesday night when the fire crossed the highway.
That fire is approximately 19,768 acres as of this morning.
Fires in Canada have already exceeded the annual ten-year average this year.
