The best path for the Spur Highway and amount of the borough’s participation are being scrutinized as the Alaska LNG Project moves forward.
Newly appointed Kenai Peninsula Oil and Gas Assistant Larry Persily gave an update on the project at this week’s borough assembly meeting.
Persily: “One thing I’ll be working with the mayor’s office and the borough attorney is the Kenai Peninsula Borough could request of federal regulators that the borough become a cooperating agency which would get the borough much more involved in the EIS, there’s a commitment of staff time, resources but it’s something the borough may want to do to make sure that as much as possible the borough is represented in this process.”
During the presentation Persily mentioned the rerouting of the highway but said not many details about it have been released.
The project’s Draft Resource Report No. 1 briefly describes the process of choosing another path for the Spur Highway (page 1-20) and Borough Mayor Mike Navarre ellaborated…
Navarre: “We don’t actually know what the boundaries are going to be for the LNG facility but we are looking at it from our GIS view, to try to determine the best route given, where things are and where existing right of ways are to see how we can best advise if the highway is going to be moved, how to go about doing it.”
There will be another update on the Alaska LNG Project at next week’s April 15 joint Chamber luncheon at the Kenai Visitors Center and a public meeting on April 23 in Nikiski.
