Alaska Special Olympics Winter Games Cancelled Due To COVID-19 Concerns

The 2020 Alaska Special Olympics Winter Games, scheduled for March 15-17 in Anchorage, have been cancelled in a move by the Alaska Special Olympics governing body over concerns of COVID-19.

Special Olympics International has suspended all training and competitions through the end of March, which lead to the decision by Special Olympics Alaska to suspend the Alaska Winter Games.

 

Sue Perles, CEO and President of the Special Olympics Alaska, released a letter to all concerned with the 2020 Alaska Winter Games.

Dear Athletes, Families, Coaches and Volunteers:

I know how hard you have all worked to prepare for the Alaska Winter Games.  We applaud your commitment and excellence.

Please know that this is a difficult message to deliver. At the direction of Special Olympics International all sport training and competition activities and other programs involving our athletes will be suspended through March 31, 2020 due to concerns around the spread of COVID-19. This means that we are cancelling the Alaska Winter Games.  Your health and safety are our highest priority.

We will stay close to this situation and work with Special Olympics International to reevaluate after March 31.

I appreciate your understanding and cooperation. Know that staff will continue to be at work and to support you any way that we can.
