The Obama administration is abandoning a proposal to ban certain ammunition after a significant amount of opposition from the public and lawmakers.
Alaska’s junior Senator Dan Sullivan joined 51 other Republican Senators in sending a letter to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) on Monday expressing their concerns about the proposal.
Sullivan: “As a strong defender of the Second Amendment, I certainly am someone who refuses to compromise Alaskans’ constitutional rights and the ammo ban was an end around in regard to the Obama administration’s attempts to infringe upon our Second Amendment rights. So you may have seen the letter that we sent. I am pleased to see the ATF heeded the concerns of Congress and the Senate and they pulled back their proposal.”
The ATF received over 80,000 public comments on the proposal, most of which were negative according to the agency.
That proposal would have outlawed types of ammunition used in popular AR – 15 style rifles which can pierce protective vests if fired from handguns.
Representative Don Young had also written a letter to the administration in opposition of the proposal.
