Flags around Alaska and the U.S.were lowered today and GCI has waived international call and text fees to Belgium following the early morning terror attacks in Brussels.
President Barack Obama issued a proclamation to lower our nation’s flags to honor the victims. He spoke about the attacks with ESPN at a baseball game he was attending in Cuba.
Pres. Obama: “The notion that any political agenda will justify the killing of innocent people like this is something that’s beyond the pale. We are gonna continue with the over 60 nations that are pounding ISIL and going to go after them.”
On Tuesday, Brussels was attacked with three explosions, two at the Brussels’ Zaventem airport and one in the city’s metro system. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attacks which killed over 30 people and injured over 200, including many Americans.
Following the President’s proclamation, Governor Bill Walker issued the order to lower Alaska state flags as well and gave a statement during a press conference.
Gov. Walker: “The situation in Brussels, we learned of this morning, the devastation and significant loss of life, the destruction. Our hearts and prayers go out to the families of the victims of that terrible, terrible incident in Brussels this morning.”
Flags will remain lowered until sunset this Saturday, March 26th.
Alaska’s General Communications Inc. also issued a press release stating they have waived “all fees associated with international voice calls and texts to Belgium. GCI customers who wish to contact family and friends in Belgium to confirm their welfare may place those calls and texts for free through April 30, 2016.”
