Voters in Alaska are weighing in early on this controversial election in record numbers: as of Friday morning, over 25,000 early votes had been cast across the state, topping the previous record.
Carol Thompson with the Division of Elections Absentee Office says although the number of absentee ballots sent out this year is lower, more Alaskans have voted early.
Thompson: “Our 2014 numbers were 20,200 total in 2014 and [19,937 *corrected*] in 2012 and as of today we’re up over 25,176 voters who voted early vote, in addition to 611 in person ballots that would have been voted throughout the state.”
Division of Elections Director Josie Bahnke says nearly 12,000 Alaskans have registered to vote since August’s Primary election.
More than one-third of voters nationwide are expected to cast votes early this year, continuing a steady rise in early votes and 100 percent increase since 2000.
Kenai Peninsula Residents can vote early in-person at locations in Soldotna, Kenai, Homer, and Seward.
