Alaskans Urge MCB to Reconsider Cannabis Clubs

Over 100 Alaskans testified Thursday and Friday to the Marijuana Control Board, many urging the members to reconsider the proposed prohibition of cannabis social clubs.

A section(306.900) of the proposed regulations prohibits licenses for social clubs where marijuana would not be sold but could be smoked or consumed in semi-private surroundings.

Attorneys advised the Marijuana Control Board members that Ballot Measure 2’s terminology does not explicitly allow clubs, thus the board does not have authority to authorize clubs.

The board’s executive director, Cynthia Franklin, says state statutes prohibit “bottle clubs”, which cannabis clubs more closely resemble than legal alcohol establishments like bars.

The state has until November 24 to finalize commercial marijuana regulations and appears to be on schedule.
