A study published in June in the journal of the American Geophysical Union found Alaska’s glaciers have sent 75 gigatons of water into the ocean every year for the past 19 years.
Those findings have reportedly helped increase sea levels by two-tenths of a millimeter on an annual basis.
Matt Connors with the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge spoke with us about the refuge’s glaciers.
Connors said the term retreating means that the glaciers are melting more in the summer than they are growing in the winter.
The team of scientists who conducted the study observed and analyzed 116 Alaskan glaciers over 19 years.
The findings stated that glaciers on the water that regularly calve appear to be retreating less than those inland, or mountainous glaciers.
