Alaska currently has a state flower as well as a state bird and its about to have a state gun.
Last month the Senate in a State Affairs Committee, passed a bill meant to designate the pre-1964 Winchester model 70 as the official state bolt-action rifle and its currently passing through the legislature.
Senator Fred Dyson introduced the legislation…
Sen. Dyson(R-Eagle River): “This is the appropriate rifle that defines a weapon that has made a huge contribution in our state and your positive vote will say you recognize that the quality and the performance of this weapon makes it worthy of being chosen. I suggest a yes vote.”
This rifle differs from most other state symbols such as animals, vegetables or minerals in that its the first manufactured product to receive the designation.
Mat-Su Senator Charlie Huggins says the Winchester Model 70 was singled out because it helped Alaskans settle the wilderness.
SB 175 was moved out to be scheduled for a floor vote.
