Forty-two schools within the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District will participate in the Great Alaska ShakeOut “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” earthquake drill on Thursday, October 21, 2021. The drill is scheduled for 10:21 a.m. and in addition, schools will conduct a radio check in conjunction with this drill.

The main goal of the ShakeOut is to get Alaskans prepared for major earthquakes and the district will use the ShakeOut as an opportunity to learn what to do before, during, and after an earthquake.

KPBSD Superintendent Clayton Holland;

“Thursday is the Great Alaska Shakeout with earthquake drills on 10.21 at 10:21 a.m.  Something we take seriously, I think we all know our history with earthquakes in the state of Alaska.  I recommend everybody practicing or making sure they are prepared.  Across the district we will do a drill including here at district office.”

The KPBSD has established an emergency notification system which is available to all parents, families and community.

Holland explained process for receiving emergency notices.

“Anyone who wants, in an emergency, to receive text messages from KPBSD; parents need to add their mobile number as an emergency contact for their student in PowerSchool and then opted-in by sending a text with the letter “Y” or “Yes” to 675-87.  Instructions for this are on the KPBSD website and social media sites.”
