Angelica Haakenson lost both of her legs after a car accident on December 25 and is now focusing on her recovery in Seattle.
Her aunt, Emily Haakenson, told us that after six surgeries, Angelica was transferred to the Seattle Children’s Hospital where she is working on physical therapy to get her body ready for prosthetics.
Haakenson: “We know that she’s doing really really well, definitely has some tough day and it’s something that you never expect to have to adjust to but shes got good spirits and definitely has a great support system there with her.”
Angelica was traveling with her mother after a family dinner on Christmas Day when the truck they were in had engine troubles.
While parked along the road near mile 145.5 of the Sterling Highway, a fellow Anchor Point resident stopped to assist in jumping the car but while the three were working on it, an oncoming SUV slid and hit the immobile truck, throwing Angelica’s mother to the ditch and pinning Angelica between the vehicles.
Emily said Angelica’s mother also had broken bones but is recovering well.
She added that they don’t have an exact timeline for Angelica’s recovery or return to Alaska but they cannot thank people enough for the support.
Haakenson: “It left us speechless, there is such overwhelming generosity of everybody, it’s absolutely amazing. Friends, family, complete strangers from all over the United States have come together and offered their help in any way they can and there has been an outpouring of generosity whether they’re donating money to help with Angelicas medical expenses or sending cards or prayers or helping with fund raisers.”
The Gofundme account for Angelica has raised over $64,000 to help with medical expenses.
