The creators of a public art installation in Anchorage that aims to raise awareness of the emotional struggles of Alaskans are hoping to rebuild the display by its original opening date.
Lead project artist Sarah Davies says 82 of the 85 sculptures that are made of straw, cement, plaster and burlap have been recovered from Point Worzonzof after most of the figures were toppled by wind and waves last week.
Davies says the official opening day is still scheduled for December 5.
Participants say the 100Stone project is about how Alaskans experience emotional vulnerabilities. The sculptures represent people dealing with traumas and mental illness.
Davies says the vulnerability of the sculptures to the elements was always a part of the project however with a majority of them damaged just days after being installed, she says the damage happened more aggressively than expected.
