Public testimony continued on the closure of the Kenai Animal Shelter’s after hours drop boxes during the Kenai City Council’s January 7 meeting.
Tim Colbath presented and had also spoke to the Borough Assembly the night before, stressing his concern of the proximity of the closed drop boxes to the Kenai Airport.
Colbath: “Having drop off boxes closed at a shelter that is right across the street from a major airport is an ill-conceived idea”.
We spoke with Kenai City Manager Rick Koch who said he isn’t aware of this being an issue in recent history.
Koch: “Henry Knacksted with Civil Air Patrol has been heavily involved in airport stuff, he’s lived here his whole life, I asked him ‘are you aware of this ever happening in your life time?’. He’s not aware of it ever happening”.
We also asked Koch if he feels this issue is something that merits action by the City.
Koch: “On a larger scale no. I think what we are doing is working, its working so far. We’ve had three after hour dropoffs that by having that discussion we found out that the animal was being surrendered it wasn’t a stray so we’re able to immediately put it up for adoption so that helps us out a lot when we’re able to know something about the animal”.
