Got an old TV or a closet full of tangled cords? You’re in luck—this Saturday, May 3, residents across the Kenai Peninsula will have the chance to responsibly dispose of unwanted electronics during the annual Electronics Recycling Day, hosted at several locations, including the Central Peninsula Landfill in Soldotna.
The event runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Soldotna and is organized by Cook Inlet Keeper and local nonprofit ReGroup, with support from the Kenai Peninsula Borough. It’s designed to keep harmful materials like lead and mercury out of landfills, while reclaiming valuable metals and components from electronic waste.
Accepted items include computers, televisions, cell phones, vacuum cleaners, appliances, and even Christmas lights. Items like DVDs, cassette tapes, electronic exit signs, and smoke detectors are not accepted. There’s a suggested $15 donation per TV or monitor, but all items are accepted regardless of ability to pay.
“It’s just a pull-up at the landfill,” said ReGroup’s Steven Ford. “You’ll be directed around the building, and volunteers will unload the car for you.”
The Soldotna event typically sees 6 to 8 tons of e-waste collected in a single day.
