Apache Corporation has said that they have not made any solid decisions to drill for oil and gas in the Nikiski area but are waiting on a wetlands permit just in case.

Lisa Parker with Apache said the company has identified areas north of Captain Cook State Park they would like to explore for oil and gas.

Parker: “So we’re in the process of applying for the permits that we need in order for the project to go forward, getting a permit in place. Should we receive the funding and get the final decision that this is something we want to do. “

They have applied for a wetlands permit from the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers and are waiting for a response in order to construct three gravel pads.

According to the permits applied for, Apache would construct a 7.45 mile, single lane northern extension to the Kenai Spur Highway if the drilling program moves ahead.

The company has been conducting seismic activity in the Cook Inlet basin and also used it for onshore activity in the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge earlier this year.
