Anchorage Police Chief Chris Tolley…

APD Chief Tolley: “I’m overwhelmed by the public’s outreach to the police department, we are so grateful to the public and the citizen’s of Anchorage in that they are doing their part that by growing the police department and showing support for the police department.”

He says the officer does not appear to have life-threatening injuries, but referenced the recent death of Sgt. Allen Brandt in Fairbanks saying “things like this can turn”.

Police have described Saturday’s shooting as an ambush. The APD officer responded to reports of a theft downtown and upon arrival a man approached the the officer’s car and started firing a gun.

Another officer arrived and returned fire at the shooter, who was injured and ultimately died at the scene.

The Anchorage Police Department has not yet released the names of the officers involved or the suspect.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

The described ambush has led APD administration and Anchorage leaders to discuss a need for increased police resources for the growing violence in Alaska’s largest city.
