Next Wednesday is the application deadline for the District 9 school board seat that opened when Seldovia resident Sunni Hilts retired last month after 13 years of service.
District Spokeswoman Pegge Erkeneff said the initial deadline was December 21 but that got extended to January 20.
Erkeneff: We didn’t have any applicants in the period that was first opened but the following day we did. So we’ve extended it until the 20th and we do have an applicant for that area that serves the south peninsula and there’s eight schools there that that school board member represents.”
Anyone interested must be at least 18 years of age, a qualified voter of the State of Alaska and a resident of the Kenai Peninsula and District 9 for 180 days.
Whomever is appointed to the seat will begin fulfilling school board member duties on February 1, 2016, and then the seat will be opened again during the October municipal elections.
Erkeneff says the application is available on the District’s webpage and more applicants are welcome.
Qualified applicant interviews will be held Monday, February 1, 2016, and the selected candidate will be sworn in during the Board of Education meeting February 1, 2016, in the Borough Assembly Chambers.
