On Thursday, March 7th, at approximately 2:00 p.m., the Kenai Fire Department and the Kenai Police responded to a structure fire near Mountain View Elementary.

According to the Peninsula Clarion, court documents show that a Kenai Police officer was traveling on the Kenai Spur Highway when he saw “a large amount of black smoke” coming from a home.

When the officer arrived at the scene, it seemed that smoke was coming from a shed that was “being used as a residence” and “fully engulfed in flames.”

It was then determined that Shane Ludvick of Kenai, 39, would be charged with second-degree domestic violence arson for a fire.

According to a complaint, Ludvick was seen leaving the property but returned at a later time. Ludvick then explained to Kenai Police that the fire began because he ignited the fire while using a lighter.

Ludvick did provide the lighter to officers.

After some more searching, a gas can was also found at the scene of the crime.

The complaint also states that the shed had been owned by Ludvick’s mother.

Per Alaska State Statute, a charge of second-degree arson describes the alleged crime of intentionally damaging a building by starting a fire or explosion.

Ludvick was arraigned on Friday and is scheduled for a bail hearing on Wednesday.
