The Mount Marathon Committee in Seward chose a patriotic submission by Caitlin Campbell of New Jersey for the 2014 Mount Marathon Race poster.

Erin Lemas with the Seward Chamber of Commerce said that Campbell fell in love with Seward in 2012 when she worked for Kenai Fjords National Park and has been involved with art around Seward since then.

Lemas: “This girl loves Seward, like last year when she won the halibut logo I was like my committee wants to know how you came up with this and so she wrote this little blurb about being in the Kenai Fjords National Park building and like looking over and seeing everybody hanging their catch of the day.”

Currently Campbell is working at a national park in California but entered her submission against 13 other Alaskans.

Lemas explained the elements that influenced the committee to choose her piece.

Lemas: “There’s a lot of detail and texture inside of it but it has the, I’m always a big fan of the red, white, and blue because it does fall on the Fourth of July so I do like to see the patriotic bit thrown in with the Mount Marathon. It doesn’t always happen but it’s pretty cool when it does.”

Campbell wrote that her inspiration “wasn’t the runner’s arduous ascent up but their perilous hurtle down,” and the view of Mt. Marathon from basically anywhere in Seward that always made her happy to be there.

She also plans to move to Seward in the future.
