The 2021 ASAA Nordic Ski Championships have risen like the Phoenix according to an announcement released by the Alaska School Activities Association.
The Nordic Ski state championships, which were cancelled by the ASAA due to conflicts and concerns with the Municipality of Anchorage Emergency Order #18, have been re-established for February 25-27 with the details and location still to be determined.
According to the ASAA website…
“After discussions with other organizations, ASAA has determined it will be able to host the 2021 Nordic Ski State Championships on February 25-27, 2021. ASAA will be sending out more information once finalized. We are excited to be able to have the event.”
ASAA, in regards to the cancellation of the Nordic Ski state meet, earlier stated…
“ASAA is announcing the cancellation of the February 25-27, 2021 ASAA/First National Bank Alaska Nordic Ski State Championships. Currently ASAA is working with the Municipality of Anchorage, the Anchorage Nordic Ski Association, and school districts to determine the feasibility of hosting the event at a later date.”
ASAA Executive Director Billy Strickland sited the Municipality of Anchorage’s COVID-19 emergency order, “Outdoor tournaments that bring together teams from outside the Municipality of Anchorage are prohibited” — prohibiting Kincaid Park (or any location in Anchorage) from hosting the state Nordic Ski championships.
A possible move to the Government Peak Ski Area in the Mat-Su would provide a feasible location for the state competition. Racing formats, times, social distancing, and more will still need to be worked out. ASAA is awaiting confirmation from the Valley on the hosting of the state championships.
