The Alaska School Activities Association (ASAA) Board of Directors Meeting, held February 22-23, addressed pressing issues in regards to high school basketball and finishing-up the winter sports season for 2021, issues in regards to the spring of 2021, and other matters which will go into effect and will affect the 2021-22 activities calendar and high school activities in the near future.
Items passed and going into effect immediately include:
State Tournament Mask Requirement : motion “to require mask for all indoor state tournaments.” (Carried – Unanimous Consent)
State Basketball Roster Limits: motion “to increase the roster size for state basketball from 12 players to 15 players for the 20-21 school year. The amount of chairs on the bench will not exceed 18. (Carried – Unanimous Consent)
Spring 2021 State Soccer Conference and Berth Re-alignment: motion “to adopt for the spring 2021 season the soccer conference and berth re-alignment as presented.” (Carried – Unanimous Consent)
Note: this action will result in the following changes for the spring 2021 season:
Division I
• All Anchorage teams will move into the Cook Inlet Conference
• Berths:
• 5 teams from Cook Inlet
• 1 team from the Mid-Alaska Mat-Su Valley teams
• 1 team from Mid-Alaska Fairbanks teams
• 1 team from the 2nd place teams from the Valley and Fairbanks
Division II
• 2 teams from each conference

2021-2022 Activities Calendar: motion “to adopt as presented” (Carried – Unanimous Consent)
DI Hockey State Berths: motion “to adopt the Region 6 DI Hockey Berths Proposal as presented. (7-1 motion passed)
Note: This will change the DI State Hockey berths to:
Cook Inlet Conference (4 berths)
Mid Alaska Conference (2 berths)
At-Large (2 berths)
At-Large Pool: the DI pool will be comprised of the 5th and 6th place CIC teams, the MidAlaska 3rd place team and the DII Champion.
Items sent back for more information & review include:
Hate Speech and Harassment Policy: motion “to table the item until more information and a thorough review can be provided to the Board.”
Directed the ASAA staff to provide more information as to the need of the policy, how 2nd and 3rd offenses would be handled, other educational course requirement options, how the NFHS rulebooks already deal with the issue, an appeal process to assure due process, pre-season educational component and the system for schools to report violations.
Football Conference Realignment: motion “ to form a football classification committee to bring back to the Board of Directors by the March 15, 2021 meeting, a recommendation on how the activity of football should be organized by division, conferences, and playoff berths.
