Major Changes To Be Finalized At December ASAA Board Meeting

The Alaska School Activities Association, the governing organization for extracurricular activities for Alaska high schools, will continue discussion and/or formalize changes to the athletic landscape of Alaska’s extracurricular activities at the December meeting of the ASAA Board of Directors, set for December 4th and 5th in Anchorage.

 

ASAA, Region representatives and school district representatives continue to address issues regarding re-classification of specific sports, state soccer format, girls wrestling, out-of-season dead period, and Mat-Su co-op requests; among numerous agenda items.

 

One such issue, already affirmed, will have an immediate effect on scheduling for the 2018 football season with approval of combining Juneau Douglas and Thunder Mountain football into one joint team which will play in football’s Division I.  The move of North Pole football to Division I adds to the domino effect of re-classification.

Other sports/school are endeavoring to re-classify; some approved at the October ASAA meeting, some up for vote at the December meeting.

 

In response to a proposal from Region 3 (Region 3 includes KCHS, SoHi, Nikiski, Homer, Seward) the ASAA Board formed a new classification committee to review the current classification system and to make
recommendations on how to change it for the activities of basketball and volleyball. Among the
factors the Board wants the committee to focus on are: cost, academic considerations and
competitive divisions.

 

The scope of the proposed and requested changes impacts extracurricular activities statewide.  The attached minutes of the October ASAA Board of Directors meeting, contained on the following link, provides a listing of action items, discussion items and topics to be addressed in December.
