The Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly approved $2.7 million in bond proceeds for new Central Emergency Services vehicles at Tuesday night’s meeting.

CES Chief Roy Browning…

Chief Browning: “That’s the first payment of several apparatus that we need to purchase to catch us up because we have a lot of issues with our trucks. Even today our main engine is down again so we’ve switched back into our old ladder truck as our first-out engine. So we’ve had ongoing maintenance issues and that’s what the voters approved in October to help us out.”

Last year Kenai Peninsula voters approved CES’ purchase of new emergency response vehicles, the price of which will not exceed $4.4 million.

Browning says the Kenai Peninsula Borough’s Finance Department determined that by splitting the bond proceeds into two, the sales would get lower interest rates.

Now that the initial payment has been allocated, the chief says they will begin the process to determine what kinds of vehicles they will purchase.

That process, along with manufacturing the vehicles, will take about a year.
