The Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly adopted a resolution that establishes the property tax rates for Fiscal Year 2023, Tax Year 2022. The tax revenue generated from these rates will provide the largest single source of funding for the borough’s FY2023 budget. The mill rate for FY2023 must be set prior to June 15, 2022.

Borough Mayor Charlie Pierce said:

The General Fund is proposed to go down two tenths of a mill to 4.5. Kachemak Emergency Services is proposed to increase to 3.40 and North Peninsula Recreation Service Area is also scheduled to increase to 1.40 mills. This is an annual event. We’re setting the mill rates for the budget cycle for 2023.”

Assembly Member Michael Tupper proposed an amendment, which passed, amending the Kachemak Emergency Service Area mill rate from 3.40 to 3.66 mills on each one U.S. dollar of assessed value:

As we amended the budget to add an additional position to the Kachemak Emergency Services staff, this is the partner to that that is going to adjust the mill rate to accommodate that change. The reason for this change is because of the increase in call volume and the decrease in volunteerism. The Kachemak Emergency Services service area board voted unanimously to approve these two positions.”

The rate of levy of taxes include the following:

  • Kenai Peninsula Borough – 4.50 mills
  • Nikiski Fire Service Area – 2.70 mills
  • Bear Creek Fire Service Area – 3.25 mills
  • Western Emergency Service Area – 2.95 mills
  • Central Emergency Service Area – 2.85 mills
  • Kachemak Emergency Service Area – 3.66 mills
  • Seldovia Recreation Service Area – 0.75 mills
  • Central Peninsula Emergency Medical Service Area – 1.00 mill
  • North Peninsula Recreation Service Area – 1.40 mills
  • Kenai Peninsula Borough Road Service Area – 1.40 mills
